Traveling with a Stelo Biosensor
Traveling with your Stelo glucose monitor is straightforward, and you can wear it through airport security without any issues. Here's what you need to know.
TSA and airport security
You can wear your biosensor through security
- Stelo biosensors are safe to wear through TSA checkpoints and metal detectors
- The biosensor will not set off metal detectors
- You do not need to remove your biosensor for screening
Body scanners are safe
- Full-body scanners (like millimeter wave scanners) will not damage your biosensor
- The biosensor can remain on your arm during body scanner screening
Notify TSA agents (optional)
While not required, you may choose to:
- Inform the TSA agent that you're wearing a medical device
- Show them your biosensor if they have questions
- Request alternative screening if you prefer not to go through the body scanner
Carry documentation
Consider bringing:
- A note from your healthcare provider (optional but can be helpful)
- Information about Stelo from the manufacturer
- Your Levels membership details
Flying with your biosensor
Wear it on the plane
Your biosensor is safe to wear during flights. Air pressure changes and altitude will not affect its function or accuracy.
Pack extra biosensors in carry-on
Always pack backup biosensors in your carry-on luggage rather than checked bags:
- Temperature extremes in cargo holds could affect biosensors
- You'll have immediate access if needed
- Protects against lost luggage
Biosensor accuracy during travel
Travel stress, time zone changes, and altered eating patterns may affect your glucose readings, but not your biosensor's ability to measure accurately.
International travel
Crossing borders
Stelo biosensors are medical devices and are generally allowed through customs:
- Keep biosensors in their original packaging when possible.
- Declare them as medical supplies if asked.
- Consider bringing relevant documentation, such as a note from your healthcare provider (optional).
Using biosensors abroad
- Your biosensor should continue working normally in other countries.
- Make sure you have reliable cellular data or WiFi for the Levels app.
- Consider time zone changes when reviewing your data patterns.
Tips for travel
Plan your biosensor schedule
- Apply a fresh biosensor before long trips if your current one is near expiration
- Bring extra biosensors in case of early biosensor failure or loss
- Account for the 30-minute warmup period when timing application
Protect your biosensor
- Use Performance Covers for extra security during active travel
- Be mindful of the biosensor when putting on and removing backpack straps
- Check adhesion daily, especially in hot or humid climates
Stay connected
- Keep Bluetooth enabled on your phone
- Ensure the Levels app has necessary permissions in your phone settings
- Download any app updates before traveling to areas with limited connectivity
Time zones
The Levels app automatically adjusts to your current time zone, so your data will reflect your local time.
Activities while traveling
Your biosensor is water-resistant and durable enough for most travel activities:
- Swimming and water sports: Safe for up to 3 feet (1 meter) for up to 30 minutes.
- Hot tubs and saunas: Use caution with extreme heat. See Using a Sensor in the Sauna.
- Hiking and outdoor activities: Generally safe, but protect your biosensor from excessive friction.
