Dexcom G6 Setup Step 2: Prepare and apply your Dexcom CGM & Transmitter
If you use the Freestyle Libre CGM, navigate to Setting Up Your Levels with FreeStyle Libre CGM.
Overview:
Here’s how to prepare and apply your Dexcom CGM and Transmitter.
1. Prepare your Dexcom CGM & Transmitter
- If this is the first Dexcom sensor you've ever applied, skip to Step 2 below. If you're in the process of replacing an old sensor with a new one, disconnect from your old sensor by opening your Dexcom G6 app, select Settings > scroll to the very bottom of the screen and select Stop Sensor.
- Find the 6-digit number on your Dexcom G6 Transmitter box. If the number is blocked by the prescription sticker on the box, you can find the 6-digit number on the transmitter itself.
- In the Dexcom app, enter the 6-digit transmitter number. You can do this manually or take a photo with your phone. This step allows for a Bluetooth connection with the Dexcom transmitter and your phone.
- Take one of the CGM applicators out of its package (see image below). You MUST enter the new CGM code in your Dexcom app.
- In the Dexcom app, enter your CGM code (see image below). You can do this manually or take a photo with your phone. You must enter the unique code during startup to avoid a manual calibration. Do not throw away the adhesive patch until you enter the code successfully.
*IMPORTANT* The Dexcom G6 can be worn on either your arm or stomach If you'd like to wear it on your arm, skip the application instructions in the Dexcom app by playing through the video and clicking Next. Then follow the video and step-by-step instructions below to apply it to your arm.
2. Apply your Dexcom CGM
- Pick a spot to apply your CGM: The Dexcom G6 CGMs can be applied to your upper arm or stomach (watch video above for exact placement on your arm). A few best practices:
- Try the fleshy part of the back of your upper arm, in the space between the tricep and deltoid muscles. Select a spot with a little extra softness - try to avoid the muscle. Avoid areas where there is scarring, tattoos, skin irritation.
Members may experience differences in glucose readings between arms, so we encourage using the same arm for more consistent results.
- Clean the spot with the alcohol wipes provided. Let your skin dry fully before applying your CGM.
- Apply the CGM:
- Orient the applicator in line with your arm lengthwise for the most comfort.
- Peel off the adhesive cover and save the 4-digit code. You'll need the cover to scan it or manually enter the 4-digit code to start this new CGM.
- Apply the sticky pad to your skin (ensuring cover has been peeled off) and press gently to make sure it sticks.
- Bend and break the safety guard to unlock the applicator button.
- Let the applicator rest gently on your skin and push the button without pushing down on the whole applicator.
- Once you hear a click, pull the applicator away. The CGM is inserted.
- Proceed to step 3 below to Apply your Dexcom Transmitter
Note: After initial application, it is normal to experience minor bleeding or feel some sensations while getting used to the CGM. For more information: FAQ: What if I feel pain or discomfort with my CGM?
3. Apply your Dexcom Transmitter
- Remove your transmitter from the box. Be sure to keep this transmitter box or take a photo of the transmitter box information on your phone, as it provides important information you may need after you've attached your transmitter.
- Clean the back of the transmitter with the provided alcohol wipes and let it dry.
- Slide the tab into the slot.
- Press down firmly on the larger end until it clicks into place.
- Activate the transmitter:
- Open the Dexcom app.
- Select Next then Yes to confirm.
- Accept the Bluetooth Pairing Request on your phone to connect your transmitter.
Note: The pairing in your phone’s Bluetooth settings will always say “not connected;” this is expected as Dexcom G6 transmitters connect, send data, and disconnect every 5 minutes. - Click Start Sensor to begin your 2-hour CGM warm-up. During this time, keep your phone in the same room as you, within 20 feet of your transmitter.
- While your sensor is warming up*, proceed to Setup Step 3 & 4 linked below. *You will not see glucose data in your apps until the 2-hour warmup period is done.
If you receive a Failed Sensor notification during the sensor warm up period, visit: What should I do if my Dexcom CGM fails during the 2-hour warmup period?
Reminder: Do not throw away your transmitter after you use your CGM. You will reuse your transmitter with new CGMs until its lifespan of 90 days is complete. We’ll make sure to send you a new transmitter in future subscription kits before your current one expires.
