Lab Test Errors

Lab Test Errors

Lab tests are very reliable, but no diagnostic test is perfect. Occasional variations can happen.

Why results can vary

Unexpected results can come from several factors, including:

  • Normal biological variation
  • Sample handling or processing issues
  • Preparation issues, such as not fasting (when required) or being dehydrated

If a result looks surprising, it does not automatically mean something is wrong. It may reflect a temporary fluctuation in your body or a specific condition at the time of testing.

Why tracking trends matters

Rather than treating a single test as a definitive answer, it can be more helpful to track trends over time:

  • Establish a baseline
  • Test periodically to see patterns and changes
  • Use your results to make more informed decisions about your health
