Lab Test Errors
Lab tests are very reliable, but no diagnostic test is perfect. Occasional variations can happen.
Why results can vary
Unexpected results can come from several factors, including:
- Normal biological variation
- Sample handling or processing issues
- Preparation issues, such as not fasting (when required) or being dehydrated
If a result looks surprising, it does not automatically mean something is wrong. It may reflect a temporary fluctuation in your body or a specific condition at the time of testing.
Why tracking trends matters
Rather than treating a single test as a definitive answer, it can be more helpful to track trends over time:
- Establish a baseline
- Test periodically to see patterns and changes
- Use your results to make more informed decisions about your health
