How to Log Food in the Levels App
Logging food helps Levels connect what you eat with what happens in your glucose data. This article walks through the different food logging methods in the Levels app so you can choose what is fastest and most accurate for you.
Logging methods in Levels
You can open the full logging menu from your timeline:
- Open the Levels app.
- From your Timeline, tap the green + button.
From here, you’ll see several ways to log food.
Describe (voice/text + AI)
Use Describe when you want to quickly say or type what you ate and let AI break it into components.
- Tap Describe.
- Type your meal, or tap the microphone to dictate.
- Tap Save.
Example: “Half a cup of papaya and half a cup of pineapple”
Later, Levels will use AI to deconstruct the meal:
- When prompted, tap Approve or Review.
- Optionally add a photo or adjust the time.
- Tap Save again.
Best for: fast, conversational input of mostly whole-food meals.
Photo (snapshot + AI recognition)
Use Photo when snapping a picture is easier than describing what you ate.
- Tap Photo.
- Take a new meal photo or choose one from your gallery.
- Tap Save.
Later, review and refine:
- When prompted, tap Approve or Review.
- Edit or remove items if AI misidentifies something.
- Tap Save.
Best for: quick logs with minimal effort when you have a clear photo of your plate.
Recents (your logging history)
Use Recents to help you quickly re-log meals you eat frequently.
- Tap Recents.
- Scroll or search through your past logged meals.
- Tap a previous meal and choose Copy meal (or similar option).
- Make any edits (for example, portion size or time).
- Tap Save.
Best for: go-to meals or snacks you repeat regularly.
Barcode scanner
Use Barcode when you are eating something with a nutrition label.
- Tap the Barcode icon.
- Scan the product’s barcode with your camera.
- Adjust the quantity or unit if needed.
- Tap Review, then Save.
Best for: packaged foods like snacks, drinks, or ready-made items.
Search (smart + personalized)
Use Search to pull from the Levels database and your own history.
- Tap Search.
- Browse suggestions tailored to your time of day and logging history.
- Optionally use the Search bar to look for a specific food or brand.
- Select one or more items, then tap Review.
- Adjust quantities or serving sizes.
- Tap Save.
Best for: everyday staples and branded foods you use often.
Custom foods
Use Custom when an item is not in the database.
- Tap More, then tap Custom.
- Tap Create a food.
- Scan the nutrition label or enter details manually (name, serving size, macros).
- Tap Save.
Best for: unique or local products, or anything with a label that Levels does not recognize yet.
Pro tips: editing and retroactive logging
Quick edit from the timeline
Long-press a meal on your Timeline to quickly:
- Edit the items or amounts.
- Change the time.
- Copy the meal to another time or day.
Retroactive logging from the glucose graph
- On the glucose graph, tap and slide the cursor to the time you want to log.
- Tap the green + button at the cursor.
- Add your meal using any logging method.
- The timestamp is auto-filled based on where you placed the cursor.
These tools make it easier to keep your logging accurate, even if you are logging after the fact or editing once AI has processed your entry.
